Take a photograph of an unlabelled wiring harness and try to trace a signal a week later. Similar wire colours, hidden connectors, and crossed leads can make a simple circuit hard to reconstruct. Label each end while the connection is still in your hand.

Name the connection

Choose a short signal name and use it in the wiring diagram, the firmware, and the label. Record connector orientation with a photograph or sketch. A pin number without a viewing direction can lead a reader to mirror the connection.

Photograph the assembly before you close the enclosure. Include an overview and a view of each connector. Route wires so the lid can open without pulling on a solder joint, then check the available movement with the power disconnected.

Keep a change record

After moving a connection, update the diagram and take a new photograph. Put the revision date beside the image. A clear old photograph can mislead a teammate if they assume it shows the current build.

In the log, explain the symptom that prompted the change and the check you used afterward. A repair note should let another person identify the same connector and repeat the observation. Keep power ratings and polarity checks in the record alongside the signal mapping.
